Gapyeong Begonia Bird Park

The parrot, one of the largest of its kind, boasts an impressive beak strength of up to 90kg, enabling it to crack even hard nuts like walnuts.

Despite its powerful beak, it has a cute appearance, affectionate nature, and captivating cobalt blue color, which is rare to find in animals, has made it a popular species.

However, due to indiscriminate poaching and habitat destruction, it's believed that fewer than 5,000 of these parrots remain in the wild.

They are currently classified as an endangered species, and efforts are underway globally to prevent their extinction.

Among the rhinoceros hornbills, this species is one of the largest in size.

When viewed from the front, it has a U-shaped casque on its beak. Like toucans, the inside of this casque is hollow.

Males are known to enjoy clashing their casques while in flight, though the exact reason for this behavior remains unclear.

When nesting, the female seals herself inside the tree hollow, leaving only a small hole open.

She then relies entirely on the male to bring her food, highlighting the deep bond between the mating pair.

If one partner dies, the other might forsake food and drink, often leading to its own death.

It's believed that they mate for life, forming a monogamous pair bond.
